If you want to build a website yourself, the very first thing you should do is to learn basic HTML language, which is the foundation code of any search engine friendly site design.
You could decide to choose for a website template, or build your website using a software application, but with no HTML knowledge, it'll be difficult for you to make simple, on the fly, modifications or editing directly on its code without using a software application every time.
It is also recommended to learn a fair deal of website optimization, usability and functionality. There is plenty of information about these topics throughout the net, or you could just buy some books to learn it, as I did.
